We are about a month into Liverpool’s friendly games and it’s nothing but smiles! The team is coming together and playing very well. Mohamed Salah, a player brought in to add more scoring, is doing exactly that: scoring! He has scored 4 goals in 5 games played. He has shown off his speed, his ability to move around easily with the ball and his ability to make plays. He will be a key player this upcoming season, and I can see the team really spreading out the field will all the speed they have.
Coutinho has also added his name to the scoring sheet despite all the transfer rumors. Klopp has made it clear though, he isn’t going anywhere. Origi and Mane have a pair of goals as well. It is good to see the 22-year old Origi finding the net as Liverpool has a lot of expectations for him. A new name that has caught our attention is Dominic Solanke. The 19-year old comes to us from Chelsea, but with top flight experience, having played for Vitesse of the Netherlands last year. There, he scored 7 goals in 25 games. He currently has 2 goals in 4 games with Liverpool. He’s not a player we will be seeing starting every game, however is a great addition to the bench, to add a little extra attack or even a slight comfort in the score.
While it seems that our scoring is progressing nicely, the one aspect that is really sticking out is our defense! We have kept a clean sheet in 5 out of 7 games played, including a 3-0 victory against German champions Bayern Munich in the Audi Cup. Defense has been the low point of this team the past few years but they have shown great improvement so far, this year. Matip and Lovren have stepped up and seem like they might have the ability to lead the defense as they both enter their second year on the team. Clyne ended last year playing really well and hopefully continues his strong play, although an injury that occurred last week will hold him out for a little while.
So far, so good, but the truly important games haven’t started yet. This week we will find out who Liverpool will play in the Champions League Playoff round, and the real test will begin! This team looks ready and is building great confidence in each other, which is great to see in a team.
